About the WHY.

Posted on March 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM Comments comments (1)
So you all know what we do. But do you know WHY ? Customers ask all the time so I thought I'd share a short version of the story.

It all starts in 2003 when my children were very young. New bedroom furniture was needed. I went shopping and was very disappointed. New furniture was getting worse and worse in terms of quality. Especially in the price range I was considering. There were some really well-made pieces but the prices were way beyond my budget. All wood pieces were in the $1200 - $1500 range and we didn't want to spend $5000 for a set.

At the opposite extreme, I searched some thrift and used furniture stores. There were some old pieces that were really solid and sturdy but they were completely out of date in terms of style and color.

I did some research, asked a lot of questions, and spoke with a bunch of people. "Was there a place where I could get well-constructed older pieces, in an up-to-date style to go with our home, for an affordable price? " NO. Everyone said NO.  I thought, " I can't be the only one who wants a place like that. There has to be demand enough to warrant a business."

So I quit my corporate-type job, rolled up my sleeves and got to work. It hasn't all been easy. Lots of peanut butter sandwiches and Oodles of Noodles for dinner in the beginning but we persevered. There have been many ups and downs, successes and mistakes, good days and awful days. But I wouldn't trade any of it for the jobs I used to have. After twelve years, we are stronger than ever. I have our awesome customers to thank for that. Looking forward to the next twelve.

So now you know the WHY behind it all. See you in the shop.

The Value of Old

Posted on March 3, 2015 at 8:17 PM Comments comments (0)
I feel there is a lot of value in vintage furniture that isn't always obvious or appreciated. Sure, we notice the color, shape, and style of a rejuvenated piece. And of course, the price. But look deeper. The real value is hidden in the craftsmanship, the dovetailed joints, the hard wood case, the actual structure of the piece. Remember, these pieces were built mostly in the USA at a time when people took pride in their work. Companies cared about value, not a quick buck.

Buying a vintage piece of furniture is an investment not an expense. While your neighbor buys a new piece that is on the curb worthless in a few years, your furniture will not only last, but it still have value when you are finished with it. You can pass it down or even sell it recovering your original cost.

To re-cap : better made, investment grade. Teach your friends.

Thanks,

Mike

Big changes in 2015

Welcome to 2015. It's hard to believe how far things have come in the last few years. We are becoming a legitimate furniture destination for customers beyond the city. Four of the thirteen vendor businesses in the cellar are from New Jersey while 2014 saw customers coming from as far as Brooklyn, Maryland, Delaware, Lancaster, Harrisburg, and Central New Jersey. Through our ETSY page, we got requests to send merchandise to dozens of far away states, Canada, and even France. Because of the ridiculous cost, we will not be shipping our merchandise anytime soon. I've always felt that we can find local buyers and so far you haven't let us down.

As the business has grown, we've sometimes had trouble keeping the right items in stock. This always proves to be tricky since we never know what the next clean-out will bring. To that end, we have decided to expand our vendor base to hopefully offer more options during those times when I, myself, cannot keep up with demand. We've opened up some additional space on the main floor for a few of our long-time vendors, thereby creating some extra space in the beloved "cellar". 5 vendors have upgraded or expanded their spaces while a few new ones have been added to the mix. There is excitement in the air as everyone loving the changing look of the shop. The old floor is coming up and walls are coming down. The new look should be finished soon as we approach the start of our 13TH YEAR IN BUSINESS !

We also continue to upgrade our selection, especially in our accessories. You will find the latest styles in decor to compliment the high quality vintage furniture you expect from us.

One piece of bad news relates to the great looking warehouse space we moved into last Spring. Sadly, due to some landlord and city issues over which we had no control, we had to leave that awesome space. It was definitely a set-back and forced us to cancel many customer projects. However, we will not allow this to halt the progress we are making and we are currently looking for a solution elsewhere.

On the social media front, we are pushing Instagram pretty hard right now. Facebook is a great venue for communicating with us through private message, however we find that not everyone gets our picture posts. Continue to like us on Facebook but also follow us on Instagram (rejuvenatedfurniture) to get pictures first and fast. The web site will be updated more often (I promise) and look for Twitter and Pinterest to become much more active. The goal is to get the pictures out to the people looking for specific items but always remember that only a tiny fraction of what's in shop gets pictured. (Usually the best or most popular pieces). But it doesn't replace the visit. You still need to stop in and get your fix. As one customer said to me not long ago, "It's like I just walked into Pinterest".

So as we enter into this exciting year, please stop in and check out the shop and we promise to continue to work hard to fill your home with amazing rejuvenated pieces.

Thanks for your continued support,

Mike

November update

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:37 PM Comments comments (0)
Ok, so when I started this blog, I thought I would update it once or twice a week.  HA ! That's so funny. A busy summer led to a busy fall and now it's almost Christmas. So here's what's new:

Rented some space in a warehouse so that's where I spend my Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and where most of the work is now getting done. (And you thought I took days off)

The website got updated and we started promoting our pieces on Etsy.com. You can buy directly on-line and pick-up at the shop. How cool is that ?

With some family help, we are cranking out pieces as fast as ever and for the first time in 10 years, I actually feel good about having enough quality pieces to show and even some backstock.

We have added some great new vendors recently and the cellar looks better than it ever has. Lots of quality up-to-date merchandise.

We are starting a photo album on facebook called ready-to-paint. These pieces are primed and waiting for color. You can buy and have your piece done in your custom color for the price listed. Check it out. Photos to be added weekly.

Well that's just some of the news. I promise to try to update more often, add pictures and tell stories. Thanks for your continued support and

SEE YOU AT THE SHOP !

And so, the blog is born!

Rejuvenated Furniture has always maintained great communications with customers and community via Facebook, our website, and in-store conversations.  Still, the feeling was that there was more to share.  We want to talk about what we do in greater detail, to talk about how and why the rejuvenating takes place, to communicate just how much time, effort and love is given to each project.  After all, every piece of furniture has a story to tell.

And so, the blog is born!  We hope you will enjoy reading about our projects as much as we enjoy doing them.  Like us, love us, share us, pin us, help us get the word out to those who don't know about us and promise to keep filling your home with amazing pieces of rejuvenated furniture.
